Putting important things first! continued...
1) Think about it - Spend some time thinking about what is really important in your life. Make a list of the top 5. Now consider what feels urgent in your life. This is probably where you spend the majority of your time and energy. Many times what we feel is important, we don’t perceive as urgent, and what we perceive as urgent isn’t really as important as it seems. 2) Consider - Now consider one action that you could take in each important area, that you know if you were consistent in acting upon, would have a significant impact in that area and on your life. I bet that was easy and I bet it immediately popped into your head. These are frequently the statements beginning with “I really should...” or “I know I really need to...”3) Act - Take just one of those items and for the next two weeks choose to be committed to actively following through. Whatever it is, is important to you. Make it happen. Then for the following two weeks add another action item from your “important” list. Set weekly short term objectives and the long term change will happen. Many times the important things don’t become urgent until it is too late. A marriage ends in divorce, a child becomes addicted to drugs, you get fired from your job, collectors start calling and the like. Most urgent things wouldn’t be urgent if the important things were made the priority. When home modifications are part of a workers compensation file, there often is an elevated since of urgency. If urgency is the prevailing motivation, you might just miss what is really important. Missing what is really important can result in costly mistakes. Take a little time to write a plan of action. And each time a modification is required, follow that same plan. Create a contact list of providers who can help you when necessary and call on these resources as early in the process as practical. Being organized in advance, can significantly reduce stress and relieve the feeling of urgency. Let me know how you’re doing!
