Utilization Review, Cost Containment and Home Modifications?
Containing cost within workers compensation most commonly revolves around 1) Time management 2) Pricing regulations and 3) Utilization Review. Obviously the quicker you can get someone back to meaningful employment the less of a financial burden is placed on the file. The industry does a pretty good job regulating the prices charged for treatments and rehab however the number of units, visits or treatments is much more difficult to manage. Utilization review isn’t a science, however with knowledge, experience and historical data, strides have been made allowing management to establish earmarks for appropriate treatment and rehabilitation planning. All of which has become more automated with the increasingly more sophisticated software programs.
Although this approach works pretty well for containing the cost of most components of a workers compensation claim, the cost of items such as home modifications are a bit more difficult to manage. However, if we approach the modification process with the same basic principles, we can expect similar results. It’s a rather simple formula:
Cost containment = Utilization review + Regulated Pricing + Timely Response
(Accurate Scope) (Fair Price) (Field Practice Guidelines)
